six stages of hashimoto’s thyroiditis

0.      Genetic predisposition without triggers. You have the family history or the genes for it, but nothing has triggered it yet and may never trigger it. Triggers can include toxins, infections, poor gut health, environment, and not getting enough rest. Genes load the gun, but a poor diet and lifestyle pull the trigger.

1.      Immune cell Infiltration – immune cells move into the thyroid gland where they do not belong and produce positive thyroid antibodies, yet other markers such as TSH will be in normal ranges. Early stage – best time to treat. The body is still able to compensate. Low grade symptoms. This is where lifestyle interventions, changing diet and correcting nutrient deficiencies will have a positive impact.

2.      Subclinical Hypo – normal TSH but not optimal range. This is where natural treatments still work. Often missed by most doctors. A great time to start thyroid medications which can start to reduce antibodies. You will also feel better. Stage 2 ½ you can go hypo and hyper because your thyroid is confused. You will always progress to low thyroid – Hypo.

3.      Overt Hypothyroidism. TSH will be higher. Possibly more intense diet changes are needed. Check for food sensitivities and allergies. (ELYSA) test. You should be on medication at this point. Here your treatment needs to be more aggressive.

4.      Additional autoimmune diseases can happen. Raynaud’s Syndrome is connected to Hashimoto’s. Other areas could create antibodies. Increased risk for Celiac, RA, Lupus, etc.

5.      End Stage – usually irreversible. This has been going on for 20-30 years and not properly diagnosed. The damage was done and can’t be repaired. You are not producing any thyroid hormones anymore. You will be required to take thyroid medication for the rest of your life. However, a change in diet can begin to lower antibodies, but it may take longer to see results.
